Most Assamese Brides pick Mekhela Chador as their wedding attire. Being Pronounced as ‘Mekhla Sador’; it is usually in cream or off-white color.
This outfit is in Moga silk fabrics with gold embellished in gold and silver threads. Although it looks like a saree, it comes in two separate clothing.

The dress is worn by the bridal in parts. The first piece is draped around like a skirt with pleats in front.
Then, one side of the second cloth is tucked to the left of the waist with the other side beautifully wrapped around the rest of the body.

Earlier, a cloth piece called Riha was wrapped around the chest by the brides. But as time passed, the bridal started wearing a usual blouse with Riha over it. Rather than opting for modern dressing styles, they choose this traditional attire only.
As Assamese Brides believe in simplicity, they choose simple handmade gold jewellery over heavy ones. These include plain gold ornaments decorated with gems like mine, ruby, black, green, and red enamels.
