ZANA BAYNE is a NYC-based leather goods brand by the creative team of Zana Bayne and Todd Pendu; founded by Bayne in 2010. Their work is known for its focus on quality craftsmanship and for inventive accessories designed to layer over any wardrobe, accentuating the personal style of the individual wearer. The brand began with a unique high-end take on S&M/punk-inspired aesthetics and harnesses. The brand has since expanded into a full line of handbags and collections of elegant leather works comprised of skirts, tops, bustiers, shoes, and hats as well as styles for men. Their leather works have been worn by celebrities and icons of art and culture including Rei Kawakubo, Debbie Harry, Beyonce, Lady Gaga. They have collaborated with luxury brands including Comme des Garcons and Marc Jacobs and are carried in high-end department stores internationally.
Zana Bayne began developing her namesake brand of leather accessories and harnesses in 2009 after moving to NYC from San Francisco via Berlin. Previously she had lived in San Francisco and ran a nightlife and fashion blog known as “Garbage Dress” which showcased her own personal style as well as that of her peers and various personalities at parties. It was through the blog that she first introduced a harness that she had made for herself to wear; but her followers began requesting she make harnesses for them. After graduating with a BFA in Conceptual Art from San Francisco Art Institute she moved to Berlin for a short time before permanently establishing herself in NYC. In her first year designing, notable stylists including Nicola Formichetti and Patti Wilson recognized her inventive unique works and they began showing up in prominent fashion magazine editorials and music videos and being worn by rock stars and celebrities. Forbes recognized her work and featured her in 2011 in their “30 under 30: Art and Design”. What initially began as a project requiring Bayne to single-handedly create leather works out of her apartment has now grown into a brand produced by a dedicated team in Manhattan’s “Garment District” and has created a loyal following worldwide.
Todd Pendu is co-Creative Director and image-maker for the brand including all projects and campaigns since 2014. Zana Bayne and Todd Pendu first collaborated on a small capsule collection in 2012 which was successfully released in 2013 through Opening Ceremony. Shortly thereafter, he became a full-time creative partner in the company.
The term “Post-Fetish” was coined by Todd Pendu as “decontextualizing traditional fetish gear into aesthetic accessories to be incorporated into everyday wear”.
